Ghosts Australia is… Disappointing

The Ghosts series captivated me ever since I saw the USA version. Then I learned that the original version was the UK one. I’ve watched both and I must say, they were entertaining.

Ghosts UK has since finished but Ghosts USA is ongoing.

Then I saw that Australia also got a Ghosts tv series. And apparently there are other Ghosts countries out there such as Greece and Germany to name a few. But for now, let’s talk Ghosts Australia.

It sucks. Bad.

The plot should have been relatively easy to follow. Young couple inherits an old mansion, the mansion is a host for ghosts who couldn’t crossover. The female lead gets into an accident caused by one of the ghosts and has a near death experience which lets her see the supernatural. She gets to learn the backstory of each ghost and somehow, the male lead learns to live with it.

The point of the show was each ghost was once a human being with an unfinished business that has led to its prolonged stay on earth. And how they lived kind of stuck even when they became ghosts. That is what made the Ghosts USA and Ghosts UK very memorable.

Unfortunately, Ghosts Australia didn’t deliver that kind of entertainment. The female lead is annoying and the male lead was a blubbering simp. The ghosts themselves didn’t feel genuine. They came across as phony and overblown. Their backstories didn’t make sense.

I loved the ghosts in the USA and UK version because they really felt like people who can’t move on. While the Australia version felt like the writers wanted to write stereotypes instead of characters.

Still, I persevered all through 8 episodes.

And the finale suck even more.

You see, the Ghosts Australia version has this strong, independent woman vibe that refused to be married or something like that. While the male lead just dotes on her and obeys her every command. Every time they meet people who assume they’re a couple or married, the woman would vehemently deny the fact, right in front of the man. And the man just mumbles and agrees awkwardly. Is this a kind of thing in Australia?

So, spoilers. The grand finale is the guy asking the help of the ghosts to awkwardly propose to his girlfriend. He does this by going out fishing near the property, pretending to be seriously outraged or something and telling his girlfriend to leave him alone or turn around or something. Then the ghosts do this awkward performance of some sort, so when the girl turns back to her boyfriend, he’s on his knee and proposes.

That’s it. That’s how lame it was.

It didn’t help that Ghosts Australia was also peppered with more “woke” stuff than usual. I’m not even against woke stuff. I’m gay, if that isn’t obvious with the kind of posts I make. But this version of Ghosts was obnoxious. At least make the whole thing entertaining like in Ghosts UK. They made fun of the one ghost who was a conservative politician and died without pants. Or the soldier ghost who is a repressed gay man. The stories made sense on why they acted like that in Ghosts UK.

Anyway, there might be a season 2 of Ghosts Australia. Despite by abhorrence to the show, I sincerely hope the plot becomes better.
