Breathless (Netflix)

Another medical drama is in Netflix and it’s called Breathless. It’s actually a Spanish medical drama. Surprisingly, it’s very high quality. It looks more like a series of mini movies on the way it’s recorded. The dub quality though is a bit wonky because sometimes the voice actor can’t really capture the actual emotion.

Unfortunately, there’s been a “slant” or bias in Spanish tv shows as of late. They’re mostly inundated with leftist bias. I saw it in “Back to 15”, Merli, Smiley and more. I’m not conservative or far right or anything. I grew quite liberal being a gay man. However, the current day leftists are unrecognizable. Spoilers after this.

Breathless (Netflix) Spoilers

The politics of Breathless is pretty much the same what Netflix pushes, if not a bit more radical. The whole thing is being buried in so many “woke” politics. I’m currently watching episode 3 and wow. One of the plot line is of a “rape” victim. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to put it in quotation marks because as the 2nd and 3rd episode is going, it looks like the victim is lying. However, the doctor (gynecologist) who examined her took it upon herself to falsify her report when she did not see any vaginal penetration or signs of rape. Towards the end of episode 2, the doctor confronts the victim and she realizes the possibility that the victim is lying and that she just put her career on the line, especially when the victim implies she’ll drag the doctor down for falsifying the document.

And now the twist is the gynecologist who wrote the report is the mother of the “suspect” and she’s in a bind. She knows that in her extreme empathy, she falsified the report for the victim and ended up condemning her son. She even shut down the resident who was with her and told her to keep quiet about the report. However, she’s now forcing the resident to testify in her place, but not to the whole truth of how she falsified the papers. Only the part where the resident disagreed with the findings. The story is currently developing in episode 3.

The Far Right Villain of Breathless

What’s a tv show if it doesn’t have an antagonist. In Breathless, the villain is the Valencian president. I find out how the whole far right president a bit extreme and comical. Being a nurse, I can sympathize with all sides of the situation. Hospitals are always in need of more funding, especially government funded hospitals. However, funding from the government comes from the taxes. The more the government promises free stuff to the people, the lesser number of people will want to work. The less number of people working, the less people pay taxes.

I’ve seen the same thing happen to my country, Philippines. My country has about 118 million people, only 26 million pay taxes on income. That’s only 22% of population paying income tax. While a sales tax of up to 14% (also known as EVAT) on most goods means most Filipinos pay taxes, it means the 22% who do pay taxes also get additionally taxes by EVAT. The sad thing is, taxpayers need to pay the universal health care plan (Philhealth) and end up paying the excess in hospital bills while the people we call “indigent” (political correct way of saying people on welfare) have their bills paid either by Philhealth or the local politician because it helps them to get votes.

I’m on episode 4 now, and they’re going about hospital strikes. The doctors want to do a full stoppage of work. No minimum services and I gather, no scabs either. Very radical move. I do not claim to have solutions to the problems in healthcare. But I think there are better ways to handle things.

The series seems to be popular as it got season 2 and a season 3 is on the works. Breathless seems to be popular enough that Netflix is greenlighting another season.
