Younger – TV Show

It’s funny that I’m now 40 and I found this TV show called Younger. I actually never knew this show and I was scrolling through Netflix shows and got curious of the title. Maybe it called out to me because of a slow impending mid-life crisis that I’m feeling right now. Watched the first episode and I got hooked.

Sutton Foster as Liza Miller in Younger

However, the casting does imply that you need to suspend reality a bit as the lead female played by Sutton Foster isn’t exactly 27 looking. But she does look “younger” (see what I did there?). The premise is basically a 40 year old woman experiences a life changing moment (divorce) and is braving the employment line. The show kicks off because Liza Miller gets mistaken as a millennial by one another 40 year old woman. This is where the casting choices, the clothing and character help contrast their ages to make the story a bit believable.

Diana Trout played by Miriam Shor is just 4 years older than Sutton Foster. But with a bit of make up magic and clever dialogue, they’ve managed to play off Liza as a 27 year old. The show Younger revolves around how Liza can keep up the charade which isn’t that much as somehow her social development stopped in her 20s right after getting married and having a kid.

Some spoilers after this.

The Evolution of Younger TV Show

Charles played by Peter Hermann (DILF alert!)

Younger premiered in 2015 and it kind of shows because they casually mention Trump and not in a negative way. The writing was also a bit free and had some plot that would be considered “cancelable” today. That is what attracted me to the show. It reminded me of the time where storytelling was not shackled by any side. However, I could see there was a slow change to become a bit more politically correct as the series went one. It kind of made me sad to see that. I want to see a human being human and committing mistakes and be a villain.

That said, I am currently on the last season. The political correctness doesn’t seem to be that bad. However, season 7 of Younger was filmed in 2020 and premiered in 2021. I appreciate how it didn’t really import too much of real life and try to change the story to fit current events.

There was an episode though on how one of the characters, Maggie Amato played by Debbie Mazar got canceled for an art show she did years before then. Side note, Debbie Mazar still looks amazing despite being 61 now. However, the hate train was started by a jealous older woman who used a fake account on social media. And that’s a point that I’ve been making these years. Hate speech laws can be easily used for evil. Maggie could have definitely sued that older woman, but the problem was it’s not going to be easy to prove you’re not “insert word”-phobic. The story is developing as I’m watching season 7 of Younger.

My Concerns with Younger

There was a niggling feeling I had with Younger. It’s about consent in a relationship. Playing by the rules of liberals of which I agree wholeheartedly, Liza’s relationship with a younger guy (Josh played by Nico Tortorella) started off with a lie. Wouldn’t it be considered non-consensual since he thought Liza was a 27 year old?

The alcoholism in the show also concerns me. It seems to be a central feature in the show. I am not against having alcoholic drinks, it’s the excess part that concerns me. The show seems to indulge on that and does show how too much alcohol leads to many of the problems the characters face. I am not averse to having a character exhibit alcoholism leading to plot, but most tv shows like Younger make it seem cool to be drunk.

Finally, sex and relationships seem to be so cheap in the show. The characters exchange romantic partners so much. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m an introvert that I haven’t had that many meaningful relationships but is this what relationships are?

Overall, Younger is entertaining. Though show ended in 2021, there seems to be a resurgence. Nico Tortorella just started a rewatch party with his fans in his Instagram account @nicotortorella

I am trying hard not to google the ending of Younger but I am rooting for Liza and Josh. I am on episode 10 and I only have 2 more episodes to go to find out who Liza ends up with.

Edit:

Lauren deserved her ending. Hahaha

Edit 2x

I take that back. Lauren deserves to fall. Hahaha
