Miss Night and Day – Netflix

Netlix released a fun k-drama last year called Miss Night and Day. The main character features one of my favorite Korean actresses, Lee Jung-eun. She’s a versatile actress that is rocking whatever role she has. She can be considered a pillar of Korean showbiz landing role after role at 55 years old. She can play the underdog character to a villain so easily.

Lee Jung-en as Im Sun, the missing aunt

To give an overview of this show, you have Jung Eun-ji as Lee Mi-jin. She is a frustrated adult with dreams of entering professional work force, especially government work. However, she continually fails the exams. She feels the pressure as she’s already 28 and still living with her parents. This might be a foreign concept in western societies, but in some asian societies like Korea, it’s a big embarrassment to continue living with parents and be unemployed.

Miss Night and Day Spoilers After the Jump

Mi-jin just came back from another failure when certain events lead to her meeting a magical cat and somehow waking up in the morning as another person, Im Sun, her missing aunt. Somehow, she becomes her aunt during the day and returns to normal at night time. What started out as a curse to Mi-jin, turns into a blessing in disguise. Apparently, due to some government initiative, Mi-jin as Sun gets hired as an intern in the government. This leads to a literal double life of Mi-jin. Intern Sun by day, misfit Mi-jin at night.

However, questions remain. Why does she turn into her aunt during day time? Mi-jin continued to wonder why and raced against time as certain people are interested in the return of Sun.

Jung Eun-ji as Lee Mi-jin

Some spoilers for Miss Night and Day follows. So, basically Mi-jin finds a way to live as her aunt Sun. She gets to claim to her parents that she’s finally productive member of society. The situation starts as an okay arrangement. Mi-jin as Sun is employed as an intern in some seniors for work program initiative for a politician. But k-dramas would be boring if the story ends there. Enter Choi Jin-hyuk as Gye Ji-woong. Ji-woong is a superstar police investigator with a chip on his shoulder.

Government interns can get paid up to 1 million won per month which is half of what is considered minimum wage in Korea. Many choose it as a way to get future opportunities while getting paid or as a good supplement to retired koreans.

Mi-jin and Ji-woong has an untimely meeting and get into each other’s hair, but leaves with a typical k-drama connection. And by some twist of fate, Mi-jin as Sun is assigned to be an intern for Ji-woong. Sun and Ji-woong has a rocky work relationship leading to some pranks and comebacks, but eventually, both work with each other as they’re thrust into a series of crimes that somehow implicate Mi-jin’s missing aunt Sun. Mi-jin wonders if finding out why her aunt is missing may break the “curse” she has.

Of course, what’s a k-drama if it doesn’t have a second male lead in the form of pop star Ko Won played by Baek Seo-hoo. With some clever writing, Seo-hoo crosses paths with Mi-jin in Sun form and Seo-hoo becomes the other guy trope that pushes Ji-woong to finally look at Mi-jin at a different light, literally in Day and Night form. And it’s hilarious when word gets out that the young Ji-woong may be interested at the senior intern Sun.

Miss Night and Day is a funny k-dramedy that has its twists and turns that will keep you entertained. There some more stuff that I will leave hanging. Does Mi-jin break her curse? Is Aunt Sun alive? And what about that magical cat? I’m going to leave these questions up in the air for you to answer yourself when you watch Miss Night and Day.
