Japan can literally make anything into anime and [C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control Anime is proof of that. The plot is about the Japan financial crisis, stock market, currencies and how hyperinflation can destroy a country.
Kimimaro Yoga is the 19 year old protagonist who is a penny pincher as he’s an orphan. Every moment for him is an every revolving door of school, work, and live. One day, he gets a visit from Masakaki, claiming to be an employee of Midas Bank. This is what I love about Japanese mangakas, the name of the bank already foreshadows the chaos the bank will do. Kimimaro is being scouted for the position of an entrepreneur or “Entre” for short.
This is the catalyst that draws Kimimaro in the the Financial District, an alternate reality where Entres duel other Entres into battles called “deals” and they use supernatural beings called “Assets”. The Entres fight with there Assets using various financial terms which would probably delight stockbrokers, bankers, economists etc. Their life points is determined by the amount of money they have, money is also the “mana” that the Assets need to fire off powerful attacks. To fire an attack is an investment with the goal of each attack draining the other Entres finances to 0 or having the most money as the timer ends in order to win the Deal.
Every Entre also gains “Midas Money” which is magically generated by the Financial District and the Entre can spend it in the real world. As the saying goes, “Time is Gold”, [C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control Anime manifests that by linking Midas Money to the time or future of an Entre.
[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control Anime Spoilers Below
The losing Entres ends up bankrupt and all their assets go to the winner. However, the Midas Money they lost is linked to whatever they used it on plus the future purchases. The lost could unravel time for the Entre. They would lose children, even a baby currently in a wife’s belly. Entire buildings would disappear, other people not connected to Midas Bank would find their lives changed and they’d be impoverished all because the Entre may have been linked to them via the Midas Money.
Kimimaro struggles the morality of flooding the real world with Midas Money which leads him to meeting Mikuni, another Entre. Mikuni knows what the effects of the Midas Money does to the real world which is a phenomenon called C that is approaching Japan. C is the the financial crash given form which can affect reality in real time. Mikuni’s solution to stop the crash is to engage in a stocks war with USA by flooding Japan with Midas Money. Unfortunately, USA also has its own Entres and they manage to repel C back to Japan by strengthening their currency.
Mikuni proves to be the real antagonist as he once again floods the Japan with more Midas Money which causes more breaks in reality as more people disappear, buildings become dilapidated and the people left behind are impoverished. Kimimaro teams up with a few people and he battles Mikuni in a deal directly. Another member intercept’s Mikuni’s 3rd attempt to flood the market with more money by stealing the Midas Money and giving it directly to the people. The increase in Midas Money plus the fears of devaluation causes a crisis with Japanese people rushing to exchange their money for US dollars, thereby making the yen become useless.
This gamble paid off as C passes over Japan because the yen no longer had any value. Meanwhile, Kimimaro finally defeats Mikuni. He gains a black card that can access the money printing press to which he demands Masakaki reverse the printing press which ends up removing any Midas Money in circulation in Japan and reverts any changes the magical currency does. The Financial District, along with the Assets and all the Midas Money disappear but not before Msyu kisses Kimimaro goodbye.
However, not all was returned to normal. Kimimaro sees that Japan has instituted the USD as their official currency, implying that the yen is forever obsolete.
The C (tv series) ends with Masakaki appearing again and tells Kimimaro that the Financial District may reappear again.
Thoughts on C (Tv Series) Anime
I can see the level of research the mangaka has done. Even a person with no financial knowledge will find themselves nodding to the financial terms being used throughout the C (tv series). The anime style is definitely beautiful and the themes well maintained throughout the tv series.
However, there seems to be some holes in the storyline. The character development seems rushed and the anime seems more focused on the financial crash itself. Just to name a few plotholes.
Kimimaro’s motivation shifts from saving money to find his dad to trying to save everyone but would sacrifice everything to keep Msyu.
Msyu doesn’t seem to have a good character development other than the tsundere falling in love with the main character (mc).
Mikuni’s seems to be the usual characte who thinks they’re fighting for the good side but they end up being the antagonist.
The ending is vague as Masakaki says he’ll leave Kimimaro alone while he may invite others to be an Entre, this restarting the Financial District. Though, he does leave Kimimaro some rope that he can call on Masakaki anytime.
This anime may draw heavily on the Wall Street crash of 1987, this time on the Japanese side of things.
Overall, it is still an enjoyable anime even if it was released in 2011.
