After 12 hour shifts in the hospital, I finally settled down enough and watched Ghost Doctor in Netflix. This TV series has been on my list for quite some time. I am familiar with K-dramas at such a young age. Especially when my sister unwittingly made me her accomplice in burning DVDs of early 2000s K-dramas. To which she sold them to her friends and I got nothing in return. Telenovelas and the like was never my cup of tea when I was younger. I did get exposed eventually and it was a different experience from the typical Philippine teleseryes.
A Spin on Ghost Stuck on Earth
This plot is a popular one with movies like Ghost (1990) and the Sixth Sense (1999) to name a couple. Then there’s Ghost Whisperer (2005), a tv series of a woman that could see ghosts and she goes about helping the ghosts resolve their issues so they can move on.
Ghost Doctor is somewhat similar. A Type A doctor who is very skilled, famous and sought after but comes with a bad personality and another doctor that came off as intelligent, a bit haughty but less skilled in surgeries. What surprised me is how they had 2 male leads instead of a couple such as in the TV series, Saving Hope (2012) which ran for 5 seasons. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ghost Doctor was inspired by Saving Hope.
A bit of spoilers, Ghost Doctor follows Type A doctor who unfortunately gets into an accident and his soul is stuck in limbo in the real world. Only one person can see him and it’s the rookie doctor he hates.
There is the usual K-drama tropes of female leads hating the male leads. Rivalry between the male leads. The rich chaebol plot of killing the chairman. Ending with a satisfying karma to the perpetrators.
However, if you’re a health care worker and just want to unwind, Ghost Doctor is a very solid tv show in Netflix. I especially like how they tried their best to make the operating room scenes as real as possible. They must have spent a lot to mimic a body being opened. I didn’t see that many mistakes in the procedures. Though, I did wonder how they kept the comatose patients alive in those many months unconscious. They’d have to be on TPN the whole time. Other than that, Ghost Doctor is an enjoyable K-drama to watch in Netflix.
